Itinerary Details

1.Karakus Tumulus

Karakas Tumulus (Black Bird Burial Mound) is a mausoleum built by the son of Antiochus, King Mithridates II, for his mother and sister. Three columns, topped with reliefs, steels, and statues, surround the tumulus. It derives its Turkish name from the sculpture of an eagle decorating the top of a column at the mound.

The tombs were unfortunately looted by grave robbers a long time ago, but you can still enjoy the beauty of the monument as you learn more about the history behind them. You can even test your Greek by trying to read one of the honorific inscriptions on the central column.

2.Cendere Bridge

This bridge was erected around the end of the 2nd century CE, near the ancient city of Arsemia, and is one of the largest intact Roman arch bridges. Ancient columns flank the roadway at the start of the bridge, and here, you can appreciate the ingenuity of Roman road builders and engineers.

3.Arsemia

Another site of rich history covered by the tour is Arsemia (Old Castle). This ancient city was once the royal seat of the Commagene kingdom. Visit the ruins of the fortress of Yenikale and its constituent castles, and the field of iron.

4.Kahta Castle

Your share of castles for the day is not over until you visit Kahta castle. This historic castle was built in the first or second century AD. Later on, in 1260 AD, the Mamluks restored the castle. Enjoy mixed monuments from the Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic cultures as you explore the old castle.

5.Mount Nemrut

The majestic Mount Nemrut is the crown highlight of the tour. Once we reach the summit, we will first explore the fascinating mausoleum of Antiochus I. Surrounding the tomb are a dozen colossal statues of Greek and Persian gods, and one showing Antiochus shaking hands with an ancient deity. Explore this unique artistic achievement as you learn more about what inspired the King to construct this magnificent mausoleum.

Here, among the ancient kings and gods of stone, enjoy the breathtaking Mount Nemrut sunset and the interesting long shadows formed by the statues as the sun goes down.

You will be taken back to your hotel once the sun is set.

FAQs

Is this tour for me?

If you would like to enjoy the historical value crowned with the sunset or sunrise, then absolutely yes. Don’t travel to Nemrut just because the statues look giant in the photos, and it turns out they are smaller. So, if the landmark is on your bucket list, then it worth visiting.

Is it safe to travel?

Mount Nemrut is perfectly safe to travel to and just as Cappadocia in Central Anatolia, Southeastern Turkey is also ok to visit.

How long does it take to get there?

If you are traveling from Istanbul, there are direct flights available to Kahta which is a super easy task even if you have limited time.

Since there are no flights to Kahta, Cappadocia is 7 hours ride to get there; enjoy the sunset if arrived on time, or the sunrise the next morning and leave for the next destination.
